Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica, Chapter Nellie Campobello

Tempe Preparatory Academy Spanish Club is part of the Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica. The purpose of the Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica (Spanish National Honor Society) is to recognize high achievement in Spanish by students of secondary schools and to promote continuity of interest in Hispanic studies.

To be eligible for the Society, students should meet the following criteria:
Student should be actively enrolled in a Spanish class.
Student should be enrolled in the 3rd semester of Spanish or higher.
Student should have B+ average in Spanish.
Or
Student is of Hispanic heritage and fluent in Spanish

Each year members must engage in an activity from each of the following categories: Academic Commitment, Community Commitment, Global Commitment.
Students must continue to show academic integrity and character as noted by no recorded incidents of cheating, plagiarism, misconduct, insubordination or intentional dishonesty.

The name of our chapter is Nellie Campobello. Who was Campobello?
Nellie Campobello was born in Durango, Mexico. She is considered the only female Mexican writer to publish narrations (semi-autobiographical) during the Mexican Revolution of 1910-1920. Her book Cartucho is a classic literary work of the Mexican Revolution. She was one of the few women involved in the center of Mexico's intellectual groups. During the Mexican Revolution, she came to Mexico City where she became later director of the national school of dance of the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes. In 1985, she disappeared. In 1998, the Commission of Human Rights discovered that she had died on July 9, 1986.
